Jane and Finch is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada area, that is located in the district of North York. It is located in the northwest end of the city. The region is roughly bordered by Highway 400 to the west, Black Creek to the east, Sheppard Avenue to the south, and Steeles Avenue to the north. The intersection of Jane Street and Finc Avenue West serves as the focal point of the neighborhood. The intersection itself was the site of a historic hamlet known as Elia, which was located nearby.
Located in the Jane and Finch neighborhood, which is a densely populated, multicultural, and low-income neighborhood Individual single-family detached and semidetached homes, as well as several high-rise apartment buildings, make up the neighborhood.
When Toronto City Councillor Anthony Perruzza implemented a rebranding strategy in 2008, banners were attached to hundreds of hydro poles in the Jane and Finch neighborhoods. He named the neighborhood University Heights in reference to the name of the neighbourhood as it appears in municipal planning documents at the time of his creation.
Jane and Finch are served by two separate public school boards that operate schools. Both the separate Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) and the secular Toronto District School Board are among the options available to parents (TDSB).
Prior to 1998, the Metropolitan Separate School Board (MSSB) and the North York Board of Education (NYBE) were in charge of overseeing the schools, respectively. The public primary education institutions in the neighborhood are operated by both the TCDSB and the TDSB.
There are several municipal parks in Jane and Finch, including Fennimore Park, Driftwood Park, Edgeley Park, Hullmar Park, Oakdale Park, Remberto Navia Sports Field, Silvio Colella Park, and Topcliff Park. Fennimore Park is the largest of the parks, with Driftwood Park being the smallest. Several municipal parks are located near the Black Creek, a tributary of the Humber River that is part of the larger Toronto ravine system, which includes the Black Creek and its valleys. The Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division is responsible for the upkeep of the municipal parks in Jane and Finch. As well as these community centers, the division manages several others in the area, including the Driftwood Community Centre, the Domenico DiLuca Community Recreation Center, and the Northwood Community Center and the Oakdale Community Centre.
The Finch West LRT, a light rail line that will run through the neighborhood, is currently under construction. A tentative opening date of 2023 has been set for the project. Building of a new community hub in the Jane and Finch neighborhood is proposed in connection with the construction of the Finch West LRT.
